First, your client types in your website’s URL into their browser, which sends a request to the DNS server to resolve the domain name to the corresponding IP address. Once the DNS server resolves the domain name, the browser sends the request to the IP address of the server where the website is hosted.
The request then goes on a wild goose chase, dodging cyber threats and navigating through various routers, until it reaches the server hosting your website.
Once the server receives the request, it’s like opening a message in a bottle and reading it. It says something like “Hey server, can I please have the webpage for this website?” And the server, being the kind and obliging entity it is, starts gathering all the necessary files, like HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, that make up the webpage using web server software like Apache or Nginx.
The server then performs any necessary server-side logic and database queries to dynamically generate the content of the page.
Next, the server packs all these files in a neat little package, adds a bow on top, and sends it back to the client’s browser via HTTP response with necessary headers such as HTTP status code, content type and any other necessary headers.
The browser then receives the package, like a child on Christmas morning, starts unwrapping it, and voila! The webpage is ready for the world to see, by parsing the HTML to construct the Document Object Model (DOM), applying the styling rules specified in the CSS to construct the Render Tree, and by executing any JavaScript code.
All of this happens in a matter of milliseconds, faster than you can say ‘cyber speed’.
